Therapeutic benefits of psilocybin (psilocybe fungi)

Psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in "magic mushrooms", is gaining increasing attention for its potential therapeutic applications, particularly in the treatment of various mental health and behavioral disorders.

Research is ongoing, and psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law in the United States. This means it has a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. However, clinical research explores the following potential benefits:

Mental health

  • Depression: Psilocybin, with psychotherapy, may be a fast-acting and potentially long-lasting antidepressant, even for those with treatment-resistant depression.

  • Anxiety & existential distress: Psilocybin may reduce anxiety and existential distress, particularly in individuals with serious medical illnesses like cancer.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Psilocybin may be promising in treating OCD symptoms, according to University Hospitals.

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): The effects of psilocybin on conditions that often co-occur with PTSD (like depression and anxiety) suggest potential benefits for PTSD treatment.

  • Anorexia nervosa: Exploratory studies have shown encouraging preliminary results for psilocybin-assisted therapy in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Addiction

  • Substance use disorders: Psilocybin has potential in treating various addictions, including alcohol use disorder and tobacco addiction.

Neurological effects

  • Neuroplasticity: Psilocybin appears to enhance neuroplasticity, potentially aiding in breaking negative thought patterns associated with depression and anxiety.

  • Increased openness: Psilocybin may elevate the personality trait of "openness", fostering imagination, sensitivity, and appreciation for different perspectives.

  • Default Mode Network (DMN) modulation: Psilocybin temporarily disrupts the DMN, a brain network associated with self-reflection, potentially leading to increased openness and a sense of connectedness to the world.

Important considerations

  • Controlled settings and supportive therapy are crucial: Administering psilocybin in controlled, supportive environments with trained therapists is important to maximize benefits and manage potential risks.

  • Potential risks and side effects: Psilocybin can cause temporary increases in heart rate and blood pressure, along with psychological effects like anxiety, paranoia, and, in rare cases, psychosis.

  • Toxic look-alikes: There is a significant danger of accidentally ingesting poisonous mushrooms that resemble psilocybin-containing varieties.

  • Microdosing: Taking very small doses of psilocybin is gaining popularity, with anecdotal reports of benefits for mood and productivity. However, current research has not yet established the safety or effectiveness of microdosing.

Note: Psilocybin remains federally illegal in the United States, although some states and cities have decriminalized its use or are exploring its therapeutic potential. It's crucial to be aware of the legal status of psilocybin in your jurisdiction and to consult with a qualified healthcare professional before considering any form of psilocybin use.
